Texas College of Mines President Dossie M. Wiggins resigns to assume the presidency of Texas Tech (Aug. 31, 1948), Construction of the Liberal Arts Building is complete (Aug. 31, 1961), Diana Natalicio assumes the chair of the Department of Modern Languages (Sept. 1, 1971),  A recent ruling by the Texas attorney general compels the University to adopt 12 semester hours as the definition of a full time student for the calculation of student fees. (Sept. 3, 1974), Despite losing many students to World War I military service, enrollment at the School of Mines nearly doubles for the new academic year (Sept. 4, 1917), The College confers its first graduate degrees, awarding Master of Arts diplomas to three female students (Sept. 5, 1942), The first instructor of journalism is hired by the College of Mines (Sept. 6, 1936).

Recent Activities

On Campus – It was a Bhutan-filled week with several events commemorating UTEP’s relationship with the Kingdom of Bhutan. A movie titled “Bhutan: Taking the Middle Path to Happiness” played for an audience at the Union Cinema Friday.   On Saturday, hundreds filled the Don Haskins Center to watch a once and a lifetime performance of Bhutanese music, dance and other cultural elements with Handel’s “Acis and Galatea” – the first Western opera ever performed in the mountain Kingdom of Bhutan.

In the Community – In honor of UTEP’s Centennial Celebration, the El Paso Chihuahuas honored UTEP during “UTEP Centennial Night” on Aug. 28th. See photo’s HERE.Centennial Photo Contest iphone

Enter the Centennial Photo Contest – You can now enter your photo in the Centennial Photo Contest. The winning photographs will go on display inside the Centennial Museum as part of the “Centennial Photo Contest” exhibit. The exhibit will be on display from Nov. 8 to Jan. 15, 2015.
