Special Lighting of Mining Minds to Commemorate Class of 2014

By on May 13, 2014

051314miningmindspickThe Mining Minds pickaxe sculpture at UTEP’s University Avenue roundabout will be illuminated in blue and orange from Wednesday evening, May 14, through Sunday evening, May 18, to commemorate The University of Texas at El Paso’s Class of 2014.

The special lighting honors the more than 2,800 spring and summer graduates who are eligible to walk across the stage during the Spring Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 17.

Mining Minds is an iconic piece of public art installed in 2010 to enhance The University of Texas at El Paso campus. At night, orange lights illuminate the steel structure while light from LEDs emanate from the perforated “ones” and “zeroes” at each end of the pick.

On special occasions, including historic dates, major annual milestones and to celebrate special accomplishments, the pick is illuminated in blue and orange. Learn more about the statue and its artist at
