21st Century Scholars Workshop to Prepare Student Leaders

What: 21st Century Scholars workshop

When: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 19

Where: Tomás Rivera Conference Center, UTEP Union Building East

 The 21st Century Scholars Program – Centennial Edition is a highly interactive hands-on workshop with an emphasis on essential career-related leadership skills including communicating in a professional setting, networking, self-promotion and working in a collaborative setting.

The 150 UTEP students selected as 21st Century Scholars represent the best of untapped, high-potential talent at The University of Texas at El Paso and will participate in the daylong workshop.

The workshop will include:

An introduction to case studies and a chance to practice related leadership skills

Lunch with El Paso-area employers matched with students majoring in their sector

Facilitated group work with required outcomes

An opportunity for formal presentation to high-level campus leaders

A self-awareness exercise designed to help students redefine themselves as leaders

The chance for students to contribute to UTEP’s Centennial Celebration planning

Following this day of programming, the 21st Century Scholars are invited to participate in campus engagement activities and other career and leadership development programming, including the opportunity to apply for fellowships at the state and national level.

Scholars were selected by University deans, faculty and staff on the basis of academic achievement, community engagement and the students’ ability to have a positive campus impact.

Spearheaded by Coordinator of Student Life Programs Cemelli de Aztlan, the 21st Century Scholars Program is presented by the Division of Student Affairs, which prepares UTEP students toward high caliber leadership in today’s competitive workforce. Through its innovative and impactful programming, students are given the opportunity to develop essential skills for their future professions.

The program was recognized as the Silver Award Winner among the 2012-13 Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education Excellence Awards given by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators.
