2014 SPRING COMMENCEMENT WILL MOVE TO SUN BOWL STADIUM
To create a memorable and extra special Commencement experience for graduates during the 2014 Centennial Year, The University of Texas at El Paso will hold a single spring 2014 Commencement ceremony at 7 p.m. May 17, in Sun Bowl Stadium. The outdoor stadium format will break from the tradition of holding three separate commencement ceremonies in the Don Haskins Center.
The University’s goal is to bring all spring and summer 2014 commencement candidates together to commemorate UTEP’s 100-year anniversary. The names of all graduates will be read, and each graduate will cross the Sun Bowl Stadium stage to be acknowledged and greeted by President Natalicio.
Candidates for graduation will be seated by college on the field. Open seating for the families and guests of the graduates as well as the general public will be in the stadium bleachers. A fireworks display will conclude the ceremony.
The last time UTEP graduates walked across the stage in Sun Bowl Stadium was in 1998 – UTEP’s 100th Commencement – when then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush was the Commencement speaker.
More detailed information will be provided to graduation candidates during the GRAD FAIR celebrations planned for March 18-20, hosted by the UTEP Office of Alumni Relations and UTEP Alumni Association at the Peter and Margaret de Wetter Center (a.k.a. Alumni Lodge).
The University also is working on special plans for its 2014 Winter Commencement, which will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2014.
