Dangers Facing Journalists, Obstacles Facing Policy Makers:
A Dialog and Symposium between Leading Policy Makers and Journalists
Congressman Beto O’Rourke and investigative journalist Anabel Hernández will join a panel of experts to discuss policies on the drug war. The panel will include Gilberto Gonzalez, Executive Director of the Texas Narcotics Officers Association and ex DEA-agent; Dr. Howard Campbell, Professor of Anthropology, UTEP; and Dr. Andrew Kennis, investigative journalist and Assistant Professor of Journalism, UTEP. The panel will discuss drug policy and welcome questions from the audience.

Anabel Hernández is well known as Mexico’s leading investigative journalist and has long researched the drug war and published dozens of exposes. Her latest book, Narcoland: The Mexican Drug Lords and their Godfathers, was recently translated into English. She was recently featured by the Guardian and also recently appeared on Democracy Now!. Hernández will also spend time with students in several classes during her stay on campus.
The events are made possible with the support of the President’s office, the Sam Donaldson Center, the Chicano Studies Program, the Center for Inter-American Border Studies, the Language and Linguistics Department, and the Sociology and Anthropology Department.
