Day 80: UTEP’s Cultural Diversity

Ft Bliss - School of MinesToday is Day 80 in the Countdown to UTEP’s Centennial Year.

Since UTEP’s first days in 1914 the University has been a culturally diverse institution.

Raul Barberena was the first Hispanic instructor in the University of Texas system and taught Spanish to the first class of mining students.

Barberena was an engineering student who was also hired to teach Spanish.

He is the first of many in UTEP’s history that places UTEP at the forefront of cultural diversity.
